Cultural diversity - Samoan

The Auckland Region has a population of 1.3M, consisting 1/3 of New Zealand. Over 37% of its residents were born overseas making it the most culturally diversed place in the country.

As a “new kiwi”, it is important to me to know what the other cultures. If you know more about them, you learn to respect and blend with them.

Migration. The first leg of Samoan migration in NZ happened in the 1950’s. In search of better opportunities, many Samoans travelled to their neighbouring Aotearoa by boat. They worked hard in NZ to give their children nourishment (kaya malalaki sila :D) and education. Sila yung nasa 30 – 40 age group.

There’s an NZ immigration policy that allows them to go here through raffle. Every yr, 1100 samoans go here through that channel. If I understood it right, sila rin yung nai-involve sa mga gangs.

Settlement. Nasa South Auckland ang kanilang community. They find safety, security and belongingness in this area.

Culture. They have extended family kaya madalas madaming occupants ang isang bahay. The head/s of the family are always consulted in major family issues. The eldest child looks after the welfare of his younger siblings while the youngest do the chores.

Humor. Samoans is a very happy culture. They laugh at almost anything. May madapa, tatawa. May pipilay-pilay maglakad, tatawa. This is their way of coping with life’s adversities.

Religion. Most of them are Christians. Church plays a big influence in their decision making.

Clash with the Tongans. Meron daw pero di sinabi bakit.

It’s not difficult to embrace the samoan culture coz I see similarities in our pinoy culture. I esp. like the humour part.

This will be really interesting.

Hi Wheng,

wow, ang laki ng company nyo. I can't imagine something that big here in NZ.

I'll takedown notes on the next seminar.

cheers.
